Pilot Peak and Sunset Mountain Lookouts

Just north of Idaho City, Idaho are Pilot Peak and Sunset Mountain Lookouts.  These are wonderful locations to visit providing amazing views with many nearby remnants of a mining community.

Drive north of Idaho City, Idaho on US 21 until reaching Mores Creek Summit.  There is a large parking area with restrooms on the east side of the road.  Park here and unload vehicles if needed.

The road to the east takes you to Sunset Mountain Lookout and the road to the west takes you to Pilot Peak Lookout.  Both of these roads are typically in good condition.

The road ends at Sunset Mountain Lookout but there are many additional roads for exploring in the area around Pilot Peak Lookout.  Most of these roads will require a four-wheel drive vehicle with good ground clearance.
